Everything Under the Sun Week 4

 • Series: Everything Under The Sun

We are entering our fourth week in Ecclesiastes, and in the first three chapters our teacher (most likely King Solomon) has presented the idea that everything is vanity and everything under the sun is but a breath (hebel) or vapor. Because everything is but a breath, his conclusion is to release the temporary and cling to a relationship with God that leads to the eternal. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, that because God has written eternity on the hearts of mankind, it is the hope and promises of the gospel of Jesus Christ and eternal hope in Him alone that will satisfy us. We have examined the teacher’s summary of the seasons of our lives. We are reminded of what we all know, but forget: we can discern the seasons we are in, and acknowledge one as a season of pain, one of joy, one of life, one of death, but we do not have the ability to dictate which seasons we receive or step into next. Therefore, we land on this truth from scripture at the end of week three: God is in control. Trust Him in every season. Here in chapter four, Solomon will begin to shift the focus to how we ought to live out the life we have been given and how we should live during the seasons that God has placed us in. Solomon looks at the impact of doing life with others and steps into the importance of protecting, developing, and maintaining relationships, community, and connecting with other people. Ultimately, he challenges us all to shift away from the pursuit of ME, to the pursuit of WE as we are living for Christ.
